RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of cumulative training of conditional relations on musical literacy and auditory and visual stimulus class formation. As musical stimuli, three or four note sequences were used in the following arrangements: sound (A), treble clef (B), and picture of piano keyboard (C). Ten undergraduates participated in two experimental phases that intercalated conditional discrimination training and tests. Half of the participants were exposed to the Non-Cumulative Condition, which consisted in training different 2 AB and 2 BC relations in each phase. The other participants were exposed to the Cumulative Condition where the relations trained in Phase 1 were added to Phase 2. At the end of each phase, tests were conducted to verify the emergence of new relations with trained stimuli and with stimuli that recombined notes used in training. It was also tested A, B and C stimulus control over keyboard playing. Cumulative Condition generated more consistent stimulus equivalence classes, refined the discrimination of relevant stimulus dimensions and produced higher testing scores with recombination stimuli than the Non-cumulative Condition. Cumulative Condition also produced higher performances on the digital keyboard playing tests. Higher incidence of errors and variability was found during tests with auditory stimuli as sample (AB/AC) or comparison (BA/CA). Results of Non-Cumulative Condition partially replicate previous study with similar stimuli. The present study contributes to the understanding of symbolic processes of musical reading and to the development of teaching technologies, with procedure capable of producing more consistent scores. Further investigations are necessary for better understanding the source of variability and low scores with recombination stimuli.
