RESUMO

Secondary caries is reported as the main cause of failure of indirect restorations. MateriaIs with fluoride release have been recommended for patients with high risk of caries but there are no conclusive evidences of their effect on fixed prostheses. This study evaluated the influence of a resin-moditied glass ionomer cement on in vitro caries development in enamel and root dentin around metallic restoration. The cervical portion (crown-root) of twelve third molars were sectioned in four blocks, which were randomly divided into four Groups (n=12; 1 block from each tooth/group): FZ (restoration luted with zinc phosphate cement), IV (restoration luted with resin-modified glass ionomer cement), Cl (negative control - no restoration and no cycling), and C2 (positive control - no restoration and cycling). In FZ and IV, metallic restorations were luted at crown-root junction. FZ, IV and C2 were submitted to a pH-cycling model (7 h in a demineralizing solution and 17 h in a remineralizing one for 8 cycles) at 37°C. All blocks were sectioned, embedded in acrylic resin and polished. Enamel and root dentin demineralization were evaluated through cross-sectional microhardness Knoop measures taken at 20, 40, 60, and 80 `mu ´m of depth (from the outer surface), and at 20, 120, and 220 `mu´m of distance from the cavity margins. Mineral loss values were calculated from Knoop hardness numbers. Data were analysed by means of ANOVA Tukey s test (at 5% level of significance) and regression analysis. Groups FZ, IV and C2 showed demineralization in relation to Cl, which was more superficial in enamel than in root dentin. In root dentin, mineralloss in EZ and IV waS smaller than in C2. Distance from the cavity margins was not significant. There was no difference between resin-modified glass-ionomer cement and zinc phosphate cement concerning artificial secondary caries development in both dental substrates
