RESUMO

In this work the evaluation of a ceramic inverted flame intermittent kiln with total substitution of firewood by in nature sugar cane bagasse (50 % of moisture h.b.) is presented. In this kiln is burned only bagasse, differently from other ones tested by the IPT (Institute of technological research), in which in the initial stage firewood is burned and bagasse was subjected to processes of drying, milling, etc. This characteristic makes more economic bagasse burning. Another aspect to highlight of the installation it is the owner empirically done retrofitting, that use the burning kiln exhaust gases in order to preheat the kiln next to the burned. Our evaluation allowed to determine the value of the losses with the exhaust gases enthalpy (Q2 - 4 %), that resulted much lower than for other ceramic kilns without heat recovery. It was developed a test methodology based on the First Law of Thermodynamics, specifically for intermittent ovens. The process is divided in "n" intervals, for each one of which are determined the fuel consumption and heat losses. The global efficiency is determinated as the relation between the useful total heat (evaporation of the moisture and bricks firing) and the consumption of fuel in the whole process. The complete cycle delays approximately 90 hours, from the load until the discharge of the bricks. As a result an average efficiency of 68 % was obtained, considered a high value this type of kilns burning biomass. The obtained bricks were also subjected to test of resistance to compression and water absorption using bagasse as fuel, in order to determine if they accomplish the established norms
