RESUMO

In this work the biodiesel fuel production chain was analyzed with respect to its sustainability. The biodiesel considered in this study was an ethyl esther of soybean oil, produced from degummed soybean oil and anhydrous ethyl alcohol, both derived from renewable resources (soybean and sugarcane). The production system of this liquid fuel was investigated by means of exergy and emergy analysis, as well as throughout a methodology that takes into account ecological, agricultural and industrial process to evaluate its sustainability. This methodology also considers inputs from ecological and economical resources, as well as the environmental impact of emissions. Results from efficiency and sustainability of a production system of biodiesel fuel are reported in this study. Also in this work, it is shown some characteristics, advantages e disadvantages of this biofuel. The biodiesel offers a clear ecological advantage over fossil fuels, reducing the global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and hence its impact on climate (Global Warming Potential). On the other hand, the production cost of biodiesel is the main obstacle to its commercialization.
