RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alterations on enamel surface after the use of 5 different techniques to remove remnant resin after bracket debonding. The sample was constituted of 50 human premolars, extracted for orthodontic and periodontal purposes, whose vestibular faces were submitted to surface rugosimetric analysis, carried out at 3 distinct moments: 1- initial; 2- after bracket bonding / debonding and resin removal; 3- after final polishing. In groups 1 and 2, it was utilized tungsten carbide burs at low and high speed, respectively. For groups 3 and 4, the employed instrument was Radlanski tungsten carbide burs, at low and high speed, respectively. In these 4 first groups, polishing consisted in the use of aluminum oxide disks with superfine granulation. Group 5 was represented by the association of resin removal plier and silicon carbide point at high speed, followed by polishing with rubber points with diamond particles at low speed. The results demonstrated that, after resin removal, the smallest surface roughness values were obtained with the use of tungsten carbide bur at low speed (group 1) and with the burs purposed by Radlanski, at low (group 3) and high (group 4) speed. Carbide tungsten bur at high speed (group 2) and resin removal plier associated to silicon carbide and rubber points (group 5) presented average roughness values which were statistically superior to other groups. After polishing, there were statistically significant differences only in relation to group 5. It revealed highest roughness than the others. Visual evaluation was carried out by 3 examiners and did not detect statistically significant differences between the methods. Based on these data, it was concluded that the tungsten carbide bur at low speed (group 1) and the burs purposed by Radlanski (groups 3 and 4) represented less aggressive methods at dental enamel for remnant resin removal after bracket debonding.
