RESUMO

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the most important causes of post-weaning diarrhea in piglets and causes economic losses in the pig industry. Alternatives methods in order to control this disease have been widely studied. Imunoprotection with antibodies from the egg yolk of hens (IgY) is an attractive alternative, taking into account the low cost of production and reduction of antibiotics use. The aim of this study was to produce IgY antibodies anti-fimbriae of E. coli F4, F6 and F41 in laying hens to use in imunoprotection of experimental post-weaning diarrhea in piglets. The chickens showed a good response to the recombinant antigens, allowing the purification of polyclonal antibodies anti-F4, anti-F6 and F41 in sufficient quantities for conducting the experiments of immune protection. Animals treated with anti-F6 IgY (Y group) showed weight gain of 34.07% and 30.41% higher than the group what received only the bacterial inoculum (B group) in weighing on days 11 and 18 respectively. The animals from Y group showed no diarrhea during the experiment, although 60% of the animals from B group showed diarrhea. In the experiment using anti-F4 IgY diarrhea was observed in both groups. In B group 80% of the animals were affected and showed a loss 1.64% of weight in weighing on day 11 and a gain of only 12.33% in the subsequent weighing. In Y group 20% of animals showed diarrhea and a weight similar to the beginning of the experiment at day 11 a weight gain of 17.14% on day 18. The experiment using anti-F41 IgY the Y group showed weight gain of 5.52% while in group B there was loss of weight of 6.25% in the first weighing. In the second weighing the Y group showed a weight gain of 14.88%. In this experiment 100% of the animals in B group showed diarrhea although in Y group only 37.5% of the animals were affected. These results indicate that polyclonal antibodies anti-fimbriae of E. coli produced in laying hens are a promising alternative to the control of post weaning diarrhea in pigs.
