Avaliação da tendencia secular da altura, do peso e da relação peso-altura de uma população de escolares da cidade de Paulinia, São Paulo : comparação entre os periodos 1979/1980 e 1993/1994

1.903 children from 9 public schools of Paulinia, São Paulo, Brazil, with ages ranging frem 6,5 to 12,5 years were studied in the period of 1993/1994 with the objective of comparing the changes in the height, weight and weight for height of this group with the study of GUIMAREY (1993) frem the period of 1979/1980, and to describe the secular trends on this period. Ali children were measured by the same person including weight and heighí. The data were smoothed by the moving means and medians TUKEY (3H3H3). technique. The stature and weight mean values were higher in this study if compared with 1979/1980 in ali age classes and in both sexes. The secular trends of stature demonstrated that in ali children the increments of height were positive. The same occurred with the weight to both sexes. The height per decade increments varied from 1,13cm to 5,Ocm in the measures of-the boys and from 1,2cm to 4,33cm in the girls. The weight per decade increments varied frem 0,53kg to 4,13kg in the boys and from 0,87kg to 3,Okg in the girls. The weight for height relation do not show any changes in the period of this study, prebably because of the good socioeconomic actual life of this populational group. Analysis of this data shows that positive secular trends is observed in this greup and that it is a sensible indicator of community health levei, being recommended that these studies should be repeated periodically to monitorize these tendencies in this city and in other cities of the country
