RESUMO

The increasing competitive market is exposing organizations to the pressures for excellence and better quality service. For healthcare organizations, these pressures are also exercised by the emotional appeal that involves the hospital product: the human life. In this environment, that does not admit any kind of failure, the supply chain management has become increasingly important, due to its relevance for the hospitals good performance, by balancing excellent customer service and pressures for cost reduction. Due to the challenge faced by hospitals in counterbalancing the dichotomy between the demand for ever better healthcare services and cost control, a study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the use of the best practices of purchasing management, demand forecasting and inventory control by the hospitals of the State of Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil. Therefore, a theoretical model for evaluation of the efficiency of the supply management was developed and it identified the low level of use of supply management best practice by the hospitals in the State of Santa Catarina, suggesting an urgent need for better qualified and highly professional managers. The result of this study validates the model as a tool for managers to spot the critical aspects of the supply chain management, guiding improvements in the customer service and cost reduction
