RESUMO

It has recently been observed that chlorhexidine presents the capacity to inhibit the matrix metalloproteinase. They were responsible for the collagen fibrils degradation. Therefore, the object of this study was to assess the use of chlorhexidine on the quality of the hybrid layer of healthy primary teeth. The mean dentinal surface of primary teeth was prepared with the aid of a carbide burr No. 330 and high speed. In the test group, the teeth were subjected to acid etching, chlorhexidine application; Single Bond adhesive insertion and restoration with resin composite Z250. The control group underwent the same procedures, except for the application of the antimicrobial agent. Twenty-five regions were examined by scanning electronic microscopy by blind examiners. Measures of gap and hybrid layer were taken and the dentin tubules conditions were analyzed. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by the chi-square and t-student tests at a 5% level of significance. The groups assessed presented few interfacial gaps without statistically significant difference. The test group presented a larger number of areas with visible hybrid layer (68%) when compared with the control group (52%). The thickness of this layer was 3.28 micrometers for the control group and 3.33 micrometers for the test group (p=0,.4). In this study, the results demonstrated that the use of the clinical-restorative protocol with the application of chlorhexidine does not interfere significantly in the morphological characteristics of the hybrid layer, and it should be indicated to increase the survival of restorations, by means of inhibiting the matrix metalloproteinase by chlorhexidine.
