RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare with cephalometric radiographs the dental effects promoted by the use of extraoral headgear and the maxillary lip bumper, installed after distalization of maxillary molars to maintain the distalized position. The distalization of the maxillary molars was made with Cetlin method. The sample consisted of 40 lateral cephalograms of 20 pacients, 6 boys and 14 girls with initial mean age of 11 years and 7 months. They were treated for a mean period of 14 months and 10 days. After distalization, the sample was randomly divided in two groups, where the AEB group utilized the extraoral anchorage by night and the PLA group utilized an integral period superior lip bumper to maintain the distalized molars during alignment and leveling of teeth. After statistics analysis, was found that the in the AEB group, the molars had a mean mesial inclination of 8,220. The upper incisors had a mean lingual inclination of 3,330. In the PLA group, the molars had an mean extrusion of 1,82 mm; mesialization of 3,14 mm; the molars had a mesial tipping of 8,320 ; the incisors had a mean lingual tipping of 5,780 . Comparing the groups, was found that there wasnt any statistical difference between the appliances. Therefore, both appliances showed efficacy as maintainers of distalized molars during alignment and leveling.
