RESUMO

Most previous studies about the influence of removable partial dentures (RPD) in periodontal conditions of abutment teeth have shown contradictory results, and variability regarding the methods of standardization and evaluation. Consequently, few comparisons can be made with the literature, as there is little systematic approach about the information reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate periodontal conditions of abutment teeth of 19 female patients (45 to 79 years old) rehabilitated with distal extension mandibular RPD and maxillary complete denture. Initially all were given oral hygiene instructions and motivation. Plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), tooth mobility (TM), relative attachment level (RAL), probing depth (PD), gingival margin level (GML), and radiographic height of alveolar bone crest (HAC) were assessed immediately prior to (t0) and six months after (t1) prosthesis setting. Evaluations were carried with electronic periodontal probe, acrylic probing stents, and customized silicone occlusal stents to facilitate standardized periapical radiographs of abutment teeth. Radiographic measurements were taken by special software (Image Tool). Data were submitted either to paired Wilcoxon test or paired t-test, at 5% significance. There were increase in PI, BOP and TM; reduction of HAC for distal surface; attachment loss and increase in PD for mesial, distal and lingual surfaces; attachment loss and reduction in GML for buccal surface (p<0.05). There was no significant statistical difference between t0 and t1 in PD for buccal surface, HAC for mesial surface, and GML for lingual, mesial and distal surfaces (p>0.05). Within the limitations of the present study, it was concluded that biofilm accumulation, gingival inflammation, and periodontal and radiographic conditions of abutment teeth deteriorated six months after prosthesis setting
