RESUMO

The effects of the administration of Sanativo (SAN) were investigated on the pregnancy in Wistar rats. Four groups of female rats (5-8/group) were treated orally with SAN (67, 335 and 1675mg/kg) or water during the pregnancy period (1st to the 21st day) and during each one of the two first phases of pregnancy: pre-implantation (1st to the 6th day) and organogenesis (7th to the 14th day) phases. After the birth of the offspring, the reproductive and offspring behavioral parameters were determined. In another experimental procedure, the effects of SAN were evaluated on Wistar rat reproductive performance. Four groups of rats (n=7/group) were treated orally for 30 days with SAN at doses of 67, 335 and 1675mg/kg and water (group control). After the mating untreated female rats, reproductive parameters, tissues weight and morphological analysis of the reproductive organs were determined. The results showed that the administration of SAN did not change reproductive parameters in all analyzed periods of pregnancy, and neither growth nor behavioral patterns of the offspring were also change. However, a significant reduction in corporal body weight of female rats treated with SAN 335 and 1675mg/kg in the pregnancy and organogenesis periods were observed, these alterations could be related with the high levels of tannins present in the herbal species that are involved in Sanativo constitution. In the reproductive performance, there was not behavioral alteration or death of the animals. However, there was a significant reduction on body weight was observed on treated groups which was associated with tannins. Reproductive parameters, likewise the weight and macro and microscopic morphology of the reproductive organs, were unchanged by subacute administration of SAN. There was no alteration on the offspring development, except by a punctual reduction on body weight of younglings on 4th day of life of the treated group (67mg/kg). In conclusion the administration of Sanativo did not induce toxic effects on the reproductive process and development of the offspring in Wistar rats
