RESUMO

The self-medication is an important way of self-care and evidences show that is the msot commom way of answers to symptoms. But the incorrect using of medicnes may put the population in serious risks and this is a problem that must be preventend. In the case of elders, this prevention is specially important because of the singularity of this populational group. The objective of this work was study the self-medication practice, evaluating the factors that influence and, classifying the most used pharmacological groups by elders in the city of Salgueiro-PE between May 01, 2004 and June 10, 2004. 355 interviews were done through a questionnaire . 77,1% of the interviewed was using some kind of medicine and 61,6% was using medicines simultaneously prescribed by doctor or not. The analgesics and antipyretics (31% and 29%) were the most used therapeutic groups without medical prescription. The self-medication is a need that comes to be a complement of the health systems. But this practice must be instructed by doctors and pharmaceutics, and the used medicines with this porpose must have their security and efficacy proved, must be easily identified by lays and have specific and clear instructions for using
