RESUMO

A stroll along some streets and neighborhoods of Londrina-Paraná State, Brazil, can reveal places where time seems to have stopped, with atmospheres which represents certain stages of its development. Urban atmosphere, considered here, refers to the personality of some urban spaces. It is defined by a series of physical-spatial and sociocultural aspects. It can also be understood as the “ aura” of places as it presupposes certain degree of involvement between the observer and the townscape. Its identification depends on the “education of look”, some recognition, and “familiarity” with the aspects that compose the observed space. This work intends to define some methods to identify atmospheres. Thus, studies of various authors who research the qualities and the spaces character determinants – Allan Jacobs, Ian Bentley and his team, Christian Norberg-Schulz, Amos Rapoport, and the PPS group; and who studies the inter-relations between spatial qualities and territorial behaviors, Robert Gifford. The existent studies and the field surveys in the streets of Londrina, enable the organization of two atmosphere identification methods. The first one consists on an identification process through the possible qualities of the place to be analyzed. The second method permits the atmosphere identification through theelements of townscape composition. Three types of atmosphere were recognized in this study and were defined as: tradition, new tradition and new old tradition. Tradition: a townscape originated in the early developed urban areas (during 1930.s) defined by a groups of wooden houses associated with a strong sense of community results in a specific atmosphere. New Tradition: the implementation of the Law nº 133 (1951) originated the atmosphere called new tradition. In the case study, it is related with the Shangri-lá area with its curved streets, vegetation and modern style houses. New Old Tradition: rethinking of traditional spatial organization according to new development schemes. Finally, it is possible to conclude that the atmosphere is a result of complex and interrelated factors. Spatial configuration, time and sense of community are the three basic elements for the construction of an atmospheres.
