RESUMO

The simbolic media, as the infantile literature, are important to transmi t attitudes to social objects. This research had as an objective analysing the contents of brazilian literary texts, destinated to children beetween 9 and 11 years, to verify how the social objects "old aged" and "aging" are showed to them. The analysed material was 35 books, where the elderly appears as character, narrator or cultural reference source, named by social labels like"retired", "aged", "elderly", "grandpa (grandma)" or by cronological rules (more than 60 years). Such books are part of a group of 95 titles, indicated by 112 3rd. and 4 th grade teachers,as books that the students use or should use. The old people is showed mainly as cultural reference source, narrator or secondary character. In any of the texts are they main characters. The following aspects were analised: sex, age, job, physical aspect , behaviour, mentions to death, using the word-"agéd" and adjectives used to old people. From the registers, four themes were extracted: aged people as cultural reference source, aging and social life, aging and dispersonalization and aging and prejudice. It wasn t possible to identify clearly one or more correct profiles of the aged. There are multiple images, different and many times conflitant with the social reality. The different characterizations reflect a social reality that determines that the experiences of aging is heterogeneous. The image brought by this literature may be occasion for social learning of age roles and expecting of behaviour related to aging
