RESUMO

The study of retrofit procedures for heat exchanger networks has been subject of numerous research work, due to its importance in inergy-saving policies in chemical processes. Early work focused on the cost (and area) estimation of the additional exchangers required to achieve the new process conditions, without considering the layout of the existing network. Later work moved to a more detailed analysis of the existing exchangers. The main drawback of these methods in that they are restricted to constant heat transfer coefficients, and do not take into account the available pressure drop for new exchangers. In this work, a new procedure for heat exchanger network retrofit is proposed. The procedure takes into account the existing exchanger network and the maximum additional pressure drop allowed for each stream. The new procedure is based on the simultaneous minimization of the additional area, constrained to the available pressure drop and existing exchanges. The network is modeled as a sequence of subnetworks, similar to the traditional spaghtti network . The spaghetti networks is extended to include both the existing exchangers and the new exchangers, and described as a nonlinear programming problem, where the object function is the additional area (and cost), subject to the maximum pressure drop available for each stream...
