RESUMO

The main aim of this PhD dissertation is to analyze the transformations in the PT s internal organization and its impact over the party between 1995 and 2009. From an institutionalist perspective, we evaluate the connection between the party and the society, the effects of the changes in the leadership selection rules over the organization, the changes in the internal cleavages, the leadership recruitment and the ideological divergences among several groups inside the party. To reach our objectives, we used theoretical and documentary researches and four surveys conducted among party s delegates between 2001 and 2007. We show, throughout the dissertation, that PT s internal organization, despite all the party s ideological changes in the last 15 years, remains unique in the Brazilian political landscape, being capable of sustaining strong connections with organized civil society and democratic mechanisms of leadership selection. We also show that the transformations in the party s internal organization reflect both PT s history/origins and the desire to win elections and govern. Through our case study, we suggest that the understanding of the transformations in the organization of a political party requires an approach combining historical, internal and environmental variables and that organizational changes are slower than ideological ones
