RESUMO

The objective of this dissertation is to study the role of non-manual markers in the acquisition of Brazilian Sign Language (BSL), for a deaf boy with deaf parents - Leo. We used Generative Theory as a foundation, which arose in the mid 1950s with generative grammar. Based on authors such as Bahan (1996), Pichler (2001), Reilly (2006), Pizzio (2006) and Pfau &Quer (to be published) we conduct an overview of research about sign languages and offer some reflections and analyses about non-manuals, above all in American Sign Language (ASL) and BSL. The non-manual expressions present two basic functions in sign languages, which are: to mark syntactic constructions and make a distinction between lexical items (QUADROS &KARNOPP, 2004), in addition to presenting the role of marking emotion. They must appear in syntactic construction of topical and focus types, in interrogative Yes-No sentences or WH-questions. Upon verifying the occurrences of the statements by the child in the data analyzed, we found that he uses the non-manual functions with a grammatical function. However, although he applies these and other constructions in a suitable manner, he uses others irregularly. It was also possible to identify situations of variation and uncertainty about the non-manuals to be used. The non-manual manifestations identified include intonational marks as one of the principal elements acquired, which can be observed in the behavior of the eyebrows, which normally appear associated to a manual sign and eye gaze. Our research was guided by an extremely recent issue, about which there are still few studies, particularly those concerning the acquisition of language. We worked with a quite complex transcription system - ELAN- EUDICO Linguistic Annotator - used by few researchers, although it is currently the most suitable for studies of sign languages.
