RESUMO

The establishment of protected areas is one of the main strategies for biodiversity conservation. The Brazilian Cerrado, the most biodiversity savanna of the planet, has been object of public and private action for the conservation of this precious biological diversity by protected areas. The Chapada dos Veadeiros, in the northeast of Goiás state, is one of the regions of especial interests for biodiversity conservation. This work presents the Cerrado characteristics, where Chapada dos Veadeiros is located, the historical process of the use of its natural resources, and the protected areas of this region. The improvement of those strategies is proposed by bioregional management models, as biosphere reserve and ecological corridor. This process has produced conflicts, some challengers, and precious opportunities for the establishment of a sustainable development in the region
