RESUMO

For more than 50 years, the kingdom of Portugal was united with the kingdom of Spain and in its own territory or in the other, very little was said about the presence of this culture before the other one. thereâs no doubt about what Spain represented in the areas of art and architecture of the peninsula. It also doesnât ignore the historic constitution of both kingdoms. What is interesting to check is how much the culture of a neighbor country represented to Portugal, not always similar as related to the results of those two fields of culture. in Brazil, considering the historic moment of the formation of the urban settlements corresponds exactly to the second half of the 16th century and part of the 17th century, the question would be: where is it possible to notice the presence of such a strong artistic culture in the existing cities? In summary, what is expected to prove is that it would have materially occurred was the presence of the Spanish art and architecture in Brazilian areas and in artistic and historic periods. so, the presence of the Spanish culture would occur in lands of Portugal and in its dominations in considerable period of time- from 1580 up to 1640. The chosen scenery for such a question was the one for the Olinda Ville, in Brazil. Being the urban settlement florescent in the 16th century and in part of the 17th century thanks to a very well succeeded sugar economy, all the artistic environment started from that point because of the constructive initiatives, basically those directed to the architecture of the religious temples. It is known that since the half of the 16th century, the Jesuits settled in the Ville. In spite of receiving lands for the construction of the church and of the school, these contractions will only consolidate in the 7o`s of that century. at that time, and in the following decade, the âermidaâ, received in form of donation, was changed and a bigger church was built and then, the school, under the supervision and plans elaborated by brother Francisco Dias, who came from the third island with this aim. The Franciscan priests arrived in Olinda and found a convent that had already started to be built in small dimensions, thanks to the initiative of Mrs. Maria da Rosa the initial construction will soon be built according to the patterns of the houses located in SÃo Francisco of Portugal. Benedictines built their small from 1592 on, according to the rules of the religion and in a lusitan standard. as for the friars from Nossa Senhora do Carmo, they were settled in the âcapitaniaâ in the end of the century and in total iberic domination. By comparing the results of such constructions of the 16th century in Olinda, the attentions were driven to what is different and unique: the church of the Carmelites, the only remaining conventual complex demolished in the beginning of the 20th century. The church has a standard that diverge from the or/ther churches. Despite its main contrafaction present artistic characteristics of two different and distinct constructive moments, it seems to reflect the style of Spanish buildings of the same kind overseas. Because this is a unique work in the quinhentistaâ Ville, it requires a great reflection about its history and it necessarily also leads the studies to the results of archeological researches recently carried out in the building. being the task of the thesis to prove the Spanish influence in the culture production in the Portuguese overseas, such conditions of the building may offer means for people to get to affirmative conclusions or not. The history of the compel of the Carmelites in Olinda was carried out by some authors some time ago. few of them could research directly in the documents that would exist in the convent, once such sources were spread since the 19th century. on the other hand, what existed this century was seen by the historian Francisco Augusto Pereira da Costa and transcribed in his âPernambucanosâ Annals. Itâs not much, but some deductions about the history of the monument are allowed. then, the art historian Germain Bazin, in his book out the baroque architecture in brazil, made some considerations, in his second book, when referring to the monuments of Pernambuco, offering, by the time, information about the existing bibliography and consulted by him. In 1985, the architect Josà Luiz Mota Menezes wrote a monography about the church where he informs about the architecture and writes about the relationship between the architecture of the church and the architecture of Spain in the 16th century. A bit more was written about the subject that could change what was then known. In 2006, the 5th regional superintendence of the Instituto do PatrimÃnio HistÃrico e ArtÃstico Nacional (IPHAN) started and concluded an archeological research in the inner and outer part of the Carmelites convent, including what was still present in the âOrdem Terceira do Carmoâ in the prospection. The presented thesis was organized because of the principles referred in two parts before, both considered instrumental for the elaboration of a third part and its conclusions. in the first part, the history of the place will be taken into consideration, the Ville of Olinda and, very specifically, the monument and its relationship with the history of Portugal and Spain in that length of time, that was then considered between the years of 1580 and 1640. in a second part, some considerations will be taken about the archeology in historic time and its use in brazil, mainly in Pernambuco in buildings that were restored or that interpretation about their history. in the third part, such acquaintances to unite with the ones coming from the archeological research in the church, so, as it was said before , held by the 5th SR of IPHAN, not considering it as the main source in the information, what refers to the âOrdem Terceira do Carmoâ . Finally, the conclusions are reached
