RESUMO

The key substance of this research project is the investigation of the contemporary contradictions in Peru based on the analysis of the book El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971) from Peruvian writer and anthropologist José Maria Arguedas. The intention was to observe, from a social and cultural point of view, how José Maria Arguedas came up with a representation of the problems faced by Peru in the 1960s, using as an exemplary microcosm the changes that took place in the city of Chimbote, which by that time had become the largest fishing harbour in the world. In a wider perspective, we may identify this book as a form of speech emerging in a moment when Latin American nations - peripheral to the center of the capitalist system - were coming up with alternatives to introduce themselves into this system. El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo (1971) -- which is considered as one of the most important works in contemporary Latin America, albeit not being too well-known in Brazil - is emblematic in forging the possibilities and impossibilities of the construction of modern Latin American states. From José Maria Arguedas speech in this work, it was possible to recover the underlying historicity which is present in the way he understands the historic complexity of Peru. Besides that, the field work at the city of Chimbote allowed us to detect the enduringness of the social reality that is presented in the book
