RESUMO

The archaeology of memory is defined, in this study, as the uncovering of the history of the African peoples, via the Atlantic, using tools such as imagery, memory and the perception of events, transmitted and stored deep in the consciousness of Afrodescendents, and in their collective world view. Its archaeological nature is based on the perception of the existence of superimposed layers in the social memory of Afro groups in the metropolitan region of Recife, in the sense that they are projected in a conflicting way, seeking to understand and shape the Afro-descendent world. This search, in the present day, is clearly demonstrated in the affirmation and recognition of identity, and in the reconstruction of a distinct citizenship. This study seeks to investigate, analyze, and interpret the expression âResgate da MÃe Ãfricaâ (Retrieving Mother Africa), which is symbolized by the groups as a large womb which still feeds its children in the Diaspora. The relevance of the study, research, and analysis of this expression lies in its forms of usage, and the meaning attributed to it, in both the discourses and the dialogues between the MNU (the Unified Black Movement) in Recife and the Afro groups, since the former is seen as a gatherer, catalyst, and mobilizer of the afro-descendent population; while the latter are seen as the main disseminators of Afro culture, particularly among children and young people. To achieve my objectives, I found only one technical approach that would broaden my understanding of that which represents, in their opinion, the strength and cornerstone of their discourses and practices â the memory. To this approach, I linked the vast historical and anthropological literature on transmigration, the survival process, and the resistance and struggle of the Africans in Brazil. Imprinted in the definition of the word transmigration â âthe passage from a place to another (a country, region, etc.), and the passage of a soul from a body to anotherâ â are images of what the past was like, and the mapping of the transformation of the African culture in a different territorial context. To understand what is today known as Afro-Brazilian culture, this ethnographic work lead me to investigate the continuity/discontinuity of the survival of this culture in the politicalideological context, which is the key point of analysis of the study as a whole. This Thesis consists of four chapters, as follows: 1 â Historical/Anthropological Perspectives: From Survival to Memory; 2 â Paths of the Memory; 3 â Archaeology of Transmigration; 4 â Afro-Brazilian Memory: Directions and Misdirections of the âMother Africa Routeâ
