RESUMO

This study is an analysis of the result obtained by a Dutch-speaking adult when acquiring/learning Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Its goal is to verify whether the cognitive system involved in this process is the Language Acquisition Device (LAD), the Problem-solving Cognitive System (PSC), or both. The different positions of the frequency adverbs, of the sentence adverb talvez and of the adverb também, taken as an adverb that indicates inclusion are provided as empirical evidence in favour of the claim that the type of verb movement found in his utterances is not V to C (according to Dutch), but V to I (according to BP). As far as problems related to the lack of nominal or verbal inflection are concerned, it is proposed that they exist due to a delay in the learning process. So, the data indicate that an adult can access the PrincipIes of Universal Grammar (UG) and acquire a second language, but it is also true that he has to learn some aspects related to the functional lexicon of the target language.
