RESUMO

The present study congregate three articles that compose this dissertation of Masters Degree in Physical Education from Catholic University of Brasília. Adolescents present lower indices for a good health-related physical fitness (HRPF) and thereby higher risks to develop diseases associated to sedentarismo. The components of HRPF, strength and muscle endurance, flexibility, body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness were evaluated according to the health criteria established by AAHPERD (1988), and muscle strength/endurance of the upper body by FITNESSGRAM (2004), and power by PROESP-BR (2007). Socioeconomic status was evaluated by the Criteria of Economic Classification of Brazil (CCEB) which stratifies the population into five economic classes (from A to E). The maturational stage was evaluated by TANNER scale to control the modifications in the components of HRPF in the pubertal period. Cardiorespiratory fitness was determined by the 1600 meters test, muscle strength/endurance by the abdominal endurance test, the power of the lower limb by the horizontal jump test and upper limb medicine ball throwing test. Flexibility was determined by the seat and reach test, body composition by the sum of the tricipital (TSF) and calf (CSF) skin fold sand body mass index (BMI). The first article was designed to investigate lifestyle and HRPF levels in students of 14 and 19 years from the high school of a public college in the city of Demerval Lobão/PI. From the analyzed adolescents 71.62% presented a regular health- related lifestyle. Regarding BMI and percentage body fat (%BF) 10.8% and 16.2% were overweight, respectively. The girls presented inferior results than boys in the abdominal endurance, ground push-ups, while in the flexibility the boys were inferior to girls. Adolescents presented a regular health-related lifestyle and most of them are in the health zone. With exception to male flexibility, all components reduced as adiposity increased. The second article was designed to analyze the influence of aerobic fitness on obesity indicators in adolescents. Adolescents were stratified into three tertiles. Aerobic fitness was higher in the tertile 1 as compared to 2 and 3. Volunteers from tertile 1 and 2 presented lower body mass, BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHR), sum of TSF and CSF, and %BF compared to the 3rdtertile. There were correlations between aerobic fitness and BMI, WC, WHC and sum of TSF and CSF. Adolescents with low aerobic fitness presented higher body adiposity (BA). The third article analyzed the motor performance and BA in relation to health criteria in adolescents of different socioeconomic status (SES). An elevated number of adolescents were below the established levels for health. The SES influenced BMI, sum of skinfolds and flexibility. The girls presented better results for BA (BMI and skinfolds), push- ups and flexibility, while the boys presented superior results for abdominal endurance, power of lower and upper limbs. Sexual maturation exerted no influence on motor performance, neither in the BA indexes in adolescents. The high SES may induce more health problems as a result of the higher number of adolescents in this category presenting a decreased HRPF.
