RESUMO

The water treatment stations (WTA) have been researching solutions for the recycling of the residue generated in the water treatment process this residue is called WTA mud. Presently, the adopted solutions are the releasing of the residue into sanitary landfills or into the sewer system. The red ceramics presents an enormous potential to contribute for the solution of the environmental problems originated in several industrial processes. In fact, studies report the true possibility of transforming industrial residue into constituents of ceramic mass for the manufacturing of ceramic products aiming the civil construction through recycling. The reusing of the residue of the WTAs through the incorporation of the mud to a matrix of red ceramics. With this mixture, probe material for the realization of several assays can be made, aiming the development of mixtures that allow the reutilization of the mud in the matrix of ceramic blocks with application in the civil construction industry. After the burning and the drying, its possible to assess the following characteristics: color after burning, linear or volumetric retraction, module of tension or rupture at flexion, water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent specific mass, loss after exposure to fire. COPASA Minas Gerais State Sanitation Company seated in Belo Horizonte (MG) has a WTA in the municipality of Brumadinho (MG) and this systems water captation is made in a lake originary from the Manso River basin. The average production of treated water is of 3,80m3/s. The WTA is a conventional one and produces 50m3 of mud per day. To reach the objectives of the present study, there were made mixtures of clay with different concentrations of WTA mud residue: 0%, 2%, 5% and 10%; there were also made mixtures with 5% of calcinated mud and 5% of grinded mud. The probe material was pressed and submitted to the following burning temperatures: 950C, 1000C and 1050C. The samples of mud were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and Scanning Electronic Microscopy and the probe material was observed in na optical microscope. In the experimental conditions of this study, it was concluded that the mud added to the matrix of the clay mass contributed to the reduction of its plastic properties. The Physical-Mechanical properties of the probe material made with the mixture of mud and clay suffer influence from the temperature of burning. The values of the drying linear retraction, of the total linear contraction and of the linear contraction after burning, of the tensions of rupture at flexion (TRF) and of the loss after exposure to fire meet the standard values for the making of red ceramics the using in civil construction. Key Words: WTA residue, recycling, red ceramics, ceramic brick.
