RESUMO

The main role of Information Technology in Knowledge Management is to accelerate the speed of knowledge transfer. The Knowledge Management softwares intend to help the process of collecting and structuring the knowledge of groups of individuals in order to make this knowledge avaliable in a base shared between the whole organization. The main objective of this work is the development of a use-based Knowledge Management typology. The typology contains eight categories: Intranet tools, EDM (Eletronic Document Management), groupware, workflow, knowledge based systems, Business Intelligence, knowledge map systems and innovation tools. Each category is illustrated by a software. This work also contains the analysis of two brazilian companies that are using Knowledge Management software. Some guidelines to Knowledge Management software evalution are presented. A correct understanding of the use of this new kind of software can turn Information Technology into the key of Knowledge Management organizational programs.
