RESUMO

The final fate of the sewage sludge, trom treatment plants, is a serious problem alI over the world today. The recycling of this material through its incorporation on agricultural and grazing soils is an important alternative. The dry sludge has 60-70 % of organics and some percent of nutrients. The remaining material, after its residual degradation, is a good soil conditioner. However, for correct land disposal its necessary to monitor heavy metaIs and pathogenic levels, in the sewage sludge and on the site soil. In this research, divided in two phases of 6 months each, plots were employed to aplicate sewage sludge, trom oxidation ditch, on a clay-sand soil, at differents rates. The evolution of some parameters, related with the organic matter biodegration on soilsludge mixtures, were monitored, as: carbon dioxid (CO2) evolved ITom the microorganisms respiration, through Bartha s respirometric methods (ABNT -1993); humidity (h) and volatile solids contents (VS); utilizing drying methods at 1050and 5500C, respectively; pH (in H2O); organiccarbon (C) and organics matter contents, utilizing oxidation methods (K2Cr207and ( ulphur acid). The results of experiments were analised and discussed. The Bartha s respirometry showed be a good method to accompany organic matter biodegradation on soils
