RESUMO

The objective of this research was to investigate effects of different doses and frequency of application of the herbicide Trifluralin to avoid root intrusion in subsurface drip irrigation in a coffee field during its initial development (6 to 18 months). While the space between rows was 2.5 meters, space between plants was 0.5 meters. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with four doses (0.00, 0.05, 0.15 or 0.25 mL of active ingredient per dripper) and three frequencies (3, 6 and 12 months) with four replicates. A drip tubing 15 meters long with 1.0 L h-1 drippers at every 0.45 meters was installed 20 cm at right side of plants and 20 cm deep. Variables measured included plant growth, dripper flow rate with small hydraulic pressure (2.5 to 3.0 meters of water column), coffee tolerance to high doses of Trifluralin (0.06, 0.11, 0.23, 0.46 or 0.68 mL of active ingredient) when plants were 18 months old, as well as soil holding capacity of Trifluralin solutions. Results allowed to conclude that 18 months after planting, coffee plants didnt suffer any negative effect of Trifluralin application, even at high dose (0.25 ml a.i.) done three times. The dripper flow rate of drip tubing was not reduced due to possible root intrusion till 18 months old. At this age, even 0.68 mL of a.i. didnt affect the plants. It was possible to verify that Trifluralin is more retained by the soil than water.
