RESUMO

A numerical model based on the finite difference technique was developed, permitting the description of the thermal behaviour during solidification of binary alloys in casting processes. The analysis incorporates an analogy between thermal circuits and electrical circuits resulting on mathematical and computation simplifications and giving a better physical comprehension of the finile difference approach. An increase of flexibility in mesh size was observed preserving the accuracy of results. The continuous casting equipment was analysed in terms of the different heat exchange regions, with a view of identification of the critical points for a control system. The developed model applied to different operating situations of cotinuous casting of steel, and the theoretical predictions were compared to experimental and theoretical results from the literature, giving a good agreement in all cases examined. Finally, the steps of model application to a control system is presented. These includes the analysis of critical points for detectors location. The machine parts which must be submitted to control or continuous adjustment, in order to permit the development of an automatic control system for a slab continuous casting equipment
