RESUMO

This study has as its goal to analyze how anxiety, depression, lack of hope and stress affect patients with cancer in pre-surgery and post-surgery conditions as well as to correlate those phenomena with demographic and clinical data of those patients. The sample was composed of 30 patients who would have a surgery (8 men and 22 women) aged from 18 to 80 years. The tools used to collect the data were the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BDI), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and the Adult Stress Symptoms Inventory of Lipp (ISSL). The results show that the participants showed a decrease in anxiety, depression and stress over the pre-surgery period compared to the post-surgery period without any psychotherapy intervention made. However, the participants who didnt show hopeless in the pre-surgery period ended up showing it in the after-surgery period. The results also showed that among the items correlated with anxiety, depression, hopeless and stress only the marital status and time between the diagnosis and the surgery showed important correlation. The conclusion is that the surgery itself is able to lead to important emotional reactions and, because of that, their analysis, intervention and control are needed in patients with surgerys indication.
