RESUMO

This research aimed to analyze the series of works by the artist Anselm Kiefer, produced by the visit to Brazil in 1987, in which the overviews of the city of São Paulo have become propulsive element. The record in pictures, on the Brazilian metropolis, became material for the development of a new series of creation that changes themes and pictorial procedures within his artistic production. The research was developed by analyzing the records of Kiefer s work in archives and libraries of Brazilian artistic institutions like the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo), Fundação Bienal de São Paulo (Biennial Foundation of São Paulo), Pinacoteca do Estado (Pinacoteca State), Goethe Institute, besides an original work of the series cited, available by a Brazilian collector. The work was based on the publications of authors such as Walter Benjamin, Daniel Arasse, Andrea Lauterwein, Andreas Huyssen, Brissac Peixoto, Sérgio Paulo Rouanet, Alberto Tassinari, Márcio Seligmann-Silva, W.J.Mitchell, Mieke Ball, Hans Belting and others. Through the material researched, considerations were developed in the context of contemporary art, using concepts developed by theorists and critics of art. It was necessary to return production of the artist since his early works, where the subjects was concentrated on German history and origin of the Germanic people. The influence of Paul Celan s poetry reflects a thematic change in the production of the artist that begins to explore the Jewish culture. These issues have become necessary for the understanding of the reasons Kiefer to engage in a series of works on the Brazilian landscape. The situation of the German artist in the post-war and the need to change the traditional concept of representation from the Holocaust, memory and landscape in ruins, they are topics transferred to different contexts and started to operate as a metaphor in the development of his artistic production. Thus, the period under review was concluded that there is a shift that starts from the problems generated by the catastrophe, experienced by Kiefer, for the understanding of many issues that allude to the contemporary urban landscape. The perception of transience is felt through the materials used by the artist in question, which guard the scars of time and open a complex field of discourses. Relations traced through the landscape of Sao Paulo will start from the specific place of the Brazilian megalopolis for issues that arise globally
