RESUMO

This work deals with the prevailing synoptic features associated to tornadoes events in Santa Catarina state during the 1976-2000 period. The analysis was done using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis, satellite images from GOES-8 and TRMM and conventional meteorological data. The NCEP data was used to depict the 3D atmospheric structure (winds, divergence, vorticity, etc) and the satellite images were useful to identify storm attributes (intensity, cloud top temperature, spatial pattern, time evolution, etc.). The technique Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) was used to establish a data bank and to diagnose possible relationship among the used meteorological variables. An analysis of land surface type involving topography and land cover/use was performed where the tornadoes touched down. Four different groups of atmospheric circulation favorable for tornadoes occurrence in S. Catarina state were defined. In general most of events were characterized by a northwesterly flow advecting heat and moisture from the Amazon Basin. Also, it was observed an upper air anticyclonic circulation (Bolivian High) in all austral summer events. Analyses of DKBB show that the meteorological variables used in this study presented well-defined patterns as functions of seasonal cycle, groups involving tornadoes common tropospheric circulation, and typical features of tornadoes and waterspouts. The analyses of land surface suggest that there is a tendency for tornadoes to occur in areas near high-elevated slopes.
