RESUMO
This dissertation presents numerical and experimental results of a flat-plate solar collector with heat pipes which was constructed, instrumented and tested ill parallel with a commercial conventional unit. The obtained experimental results of the two collectores are compared to show their relative merits. The experimental results of the flat-plate solar collector are also compared with its numerical predictions from the developed modell14J. The analytical solution of the methanol heat pipes is obtained using one dimensional formulation and their limits are calculated to ensure the performance of the collector. Th~ fiat-plate solar collector is analysed following the method of Duffie and Beckman (1980) 114] wit~ modification to suit the use of heat pipes for heat transport and removal. The experimental tests of the fiat-plate solar collector with heat pipes are compared with the numerical predictions giving good agreement in the test range especially around mid-day wh~n the collector approaches the heat pipes operating temperature. The poor performance of the solar collector in the morning and late afternoon is due to high incidence angle of solar beams which impairs the performance of the heat pipes
