RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship among rectus abdominis muscles diastasis in postpartum and the newborn weight, and also the age, gestations, body mass index, and transverse greater pelvis, iliac spine and iliac crest diameters of the women in the study. Methods: 30 postpartum subjects were evaluated. Measurements were taken between 6 to 24 hours after delivery at Hospital das ClÃnicas of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and Centro Integrado de SaÃde Amaury de Medeiros. Diastasis was assessed by 4.5-cm calliper above the umbilicus and an anthropometric rule was used to measure the pelvis externally. Results: The Pearson correlation test revealed a significant correlation between diastasis and newborn weight (p=0,003*) and showed a trend in relation to diastasis, gestations (p=0,05) and iliac spine diameter (p=0,07). Diastasis was not correlated with other variables. Conclusion: All women evaluated in this study presented diastasis. Women whose newborns were heavier showed a significantly greater diastasis, whereas those women who had more gestations rarely presented this tendency
