RESUMO

The wind energy potential in the Northeast of Brazil, and especially in the state of Ceará is huge and offers conditions to compensate the missing options for building further full size hydroelectric Power plants and to guarantee the energy supply for this region with green renewable energy. Apart from that it offers opportunities for promoting a sustainable social and industrial development growth of the region. One of the obstacles for growth of this sector is a shortage of national suppliers of wind turbines. Few Brazilian companies manufacture wind turbines and the major part of the wind turbines installed today in Brazil are imported or are very often of low quality, which is a serious operation-, maintenance-, safety- and repair problem. In order to create alternatives for the generation of electrical energy on the base of renewable sources it is necessary to create a national Brazilian industry for wind turbines which are technical, operationally and economical viable. There are companies in the northeast of Brazil producing components, like communication masts, that could be used for small wind generator projects as base for these machines. Apart from that, nature here is offering natural fibers which could be used as composite material for rotor blades in an economic and environmental friendly way. This would give a chance for people with low income to enter the fabrication process of wind turbines. This study intends to investigate the viability of the use of local components and materials for rotor blades of small wind turbines made of polymer composite reinforced with natural Brazilian fibers. The intention is to investigate the technical viability to substitute the common technique of making rotor blades out of composite reinforced by glass fibers, by rotor blades made out of composite reinforced with natural fibers (jute) from the northeast of Brazil. Thus the intention is to promote the technological development of wind turbines by using composite reinforced with natural fiber.
