RESUMO

Brazil is the largest producer and consumer of charcoal with 75% for the steel industry. Carbonization processes are usually difficult to control craft technologies and offering relatively low mass yields. The average values are often admitted between 18 and 25%. New technologies are being developed to improve these numbers. Pyrolysis under pressure is one such technique. Recent studies have shown that the use of the pressure may increase by 50% gravimetric yield and reduce the carbonization time. It is in this context that the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) in partnership with the French Agricultural research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) statistically studied the impact of pressure on the carbonization process. The trials, thirty six (36) in total, were conducted on Eucalyptus grandis wood specie and focused on three relative pressures (0, 5 and 10 bars), two temperatures (450 and 600 C) and three moisture content (0, 15 and 110%). Five variables in response to the experiments were analysed and discussed using a random factorial analysis: gravimetric yield (GY), fixed carbon yield (FCY), bulk density (BD), fixed carbon content (FCC) and higher calorific value (HCV). The RG displays the highest gain (+17%) for 0 to 5 bars at 450 C. For a 110% of wood moisture content value, the DA increase significantly (33%) between 5 to 10 bars. The pressure has a negative impact on the CFC and the HCV with respectively 76 to 70%. and 7390 to 7165 Kcal/kg.
