RESUMO

Reinforced earth structure is a composite system that involves basically three components: the soil, the reinforcement and the soil-reinforcement interface. The performance of the reinforced structure will depend on the interaction among these components. This interaction can be studied by monitoring a sufficiently large number of full scale field tests, laboratory tests on reduced scale or in centrifuge tests. However, the cost of performing and monitoring these tests is very high, which turns this procedure inconvenient from a practical viewpoint. The parametric analyses, by Finite Element Method (FEM), are a cost effective alternative to a large number of tests. This method has the potential to allow us to examine the effects of changes in the configuration of the reinforced system (i.e., the type and quantity of the reinforcement, space distribution of the reinforcement elements into the soil structure, etc) and to model the complete response of a reinforced structure up to collapse. In order to model a reinforcement structure, by FEM, it is important to adopt a formulation that considers the nonlinear constitutive behavior of the materials. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt methods for the solution of nonlinear systems of equations, and schemes for integrating the constitutive relations that satisfy, at the global level and at the local level, the equilibrium and the constitutive equations, respectively. Thus, the present work presents a physical nonlinear formulation of reinforced earth structures. Moreover, this work involves computational implementations of elasto-plastic models to represent the idealized form of the constitutive behavior of the soil and the soilreinforcement interface, and computational implementations of integration schemes of the constitutive relations for these elements. The examples studied by the numeric implementations suggest that the methodology can be applied to the solution of practical Civil Engineering problems.
