RESUMO

The Telecom sector, considered the new economy aggregating and activating pole, has increased globally. Althought, in Brazil the vanishing of repressing demand for voice services and the introduction of new competidors, combined with some social facts have produced a huge change on the competitivity of the setor. The main purpose of this work was to investigate the attractiveness of the mobile telephony industry in Brazil, taking as a parameter the market five forces model developed by Porter. To achieve the objective, it was carried out a review of literature on such model through which the theoretical proposals and empirical results on sectoral attractiveness were identified. The methodology consisted of the application of an exploratory research design. In this direction, the primary data was collected through interviews . The primary and secondary data were analyzed quantitatively and mainly qualitatively. The results show that, in spite an unquestionable period of sector growth it did not represent the pay back aimed by the incumbent firms. Therefore, the results suggest that this sector finds itself ran out of reforms as a mean of facing a new situation, involves competition, reduction of profit margins and the need of high investments.
