RESUMO

The acid-base balance found in blood samples extracted from the umbilical cord of sixty-two newborn infants, delivered of birth in a squatting position, was analysed to assess the infant s state of health. For such, gasometric standards of the samples, obtained through individualized puncturing were established based on the levels of pH, BD, pCO2 and pO2 present immediately following birth. These births carried out with the parturient women in a squatting position, were attended by the Medical Staff of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Departa.ment, School of Medical Science, Campinas State University from 24/07/82 to 23/11/85. The parturients were volunteers who were organically healtbland offered no risk during pregnancy. With the intention of allowing the acid-base balance to be influenced by none other than the squatting position, the cases which during dilation presented signs of fetal suffering, diagnosed by electric continuous monitoring of the fetal heartbeats, were thereby eliminated . The criteria of selection used, led to the formation of a homogeneous group of parturients, represented by women from a low age bracket and low parity. (...continue)
