RESUMO

Frequency selective characteristics oí waveguides with a dielectric grating are analyzed in this work, having in mind their use as dichroic suríaces in the millimeter frequency bando. A rigorous formulation is used for analysis of these waveguides. In this formulation the propagation constant and the field distribution inside the grating are obtained by means of an eigenvalue equation. After this calculation the fields may be obtained in the remaining regions of the waveguide. When the variation of the dielectric constant in the periodic layer is of the step type, the propagation constant and fields distribution inside this layer may also be obtained analytically from the propagation characteristics in infiniteperiodic structures along the direction transverse to the periodicity. The formulation developed in this work for step varying dielectric constant in the periodic layer allows the analysis of periodic structures with a characteristic cell consisting oí an arbitrary array of dielectric slabs, finiteor infinitely long along the periodicity. Besides, the procedure used for the evaluation of the fields scattered by the waveguide allows the calculation of the fields in any region of the waveguide. The results presented explore various design configurations of waveguides with a dielectric grating for uses as dichroic surfaces
