RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of care provided to HIV-infected pregnant women in a reference health care facility in Fortaleza, Ceará State-Brazil, according to official recommendations from Brazilian Health Authorities regarding the prevention of HIV vertical transmission (VT). This was a quantitative retrospective, and descriptive study based on data analysis from Division of Epidemiology from Distrital Gonzaguinha de Messejana Districtal Hospital (NUHEP), a regional reference for specialized care in STD/HIV/AIDS since 2005. Initially, we made the identification of HIV infected pregnant women notified to NUHEP. Thereafter, we used an instrument of data collection based on the case report form. In the period stipulated for the study were reported 150 HIV infected pregnant women. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 15.0. The average age of the pregnant women were 26.77 years (SD 5.84), ranging from 13 to 41 years. It was observed that during the period of time analysed the number of HIV-infected pregnant women increased, the most frequent age group was 20 to 29 years, and use of antiretroviral drugs occurred in 86.3% cases, a percentage similar to a previous study conducted five years before. It was found that 79.5% of pregnant women underwent the prophylactic use of antiretroviral drugs during pregnancy, with zidovudine given intra partum, and to the newborn. Data found in the study, despite methodological limitations, show that in order to ensure the reduction of HIV VT, rather than further specific recommendations, it is necessary to fulfill those already already established by Brazilian Health Authorities, not currently operationalized in their entirety. It was quoted that the case report form need to be improved.
