RESUMO

In any continuously operating process, dow-time íor maintenance is a costly overhead. The highter competitive situation of the pulp and paper market leads many mills to adapt modern predictjve maintenance techniques. Such techniques will identify most incipient rotating-equipment faults before they develop into a dangerous situation. The identification of equipment faults can be done through the use of machine condition moni~oring techniques; the most convenient way to implement them is to know the mathematical model of the structure: only in this case the real causejeffect relations can be established for any paint oí measurement. The model usually requires several assumptions to represent local interactions, such as the contact between the cylinders, in papermaking process, which include the sheet, the felt and the rubber cover. The nip action in cylindrical rolls in the papermaking process involves the contact between two bodies in rolling motion. This problem comprises a steel or granite roll pressed against a rubber-like layer bonded to a roll core made of steel. In the papermaking process, cylindrical rolls are used in the dewatering stages, as well as for specific treatments of the paper web to modify its properties as a materiál. These assumptions introduce uncertanties in the calculated modal characteristic and predicted structural responses. To validate the model, tests were made in a laboratory model of a press and an actual press section of a paper machine. The contact between the cylinders and the suports were represented by spring and damping constants and a sensitivity analysis was made to determine the i nfluence of the contact parameters on the dynamic properties oí the system
