RESUMO

Currently Brazil is the country that owns the biggest number of relative information to the thermal requirement of opened buildings in summer conditions of tropical climates. However, exists the need of investigations concerning the energy expense, efficiency of the heating systems, animal welfare and contamination levels of the air for the architectural and constructive conditions of the Brazilian poultry building in winter periods. With this, the general aim of this research was to evaluate the aspects related to the animal behavior that is indicative of the welfare young chickens, lodged in commercial facilities, submitted to three different heating systems. To present research was developed in commercial farm integrated of the Perdigão Company, containing three similar buildings (treatment), equipped with three different heating system (treatment 1: furnace with indirect air heating; treatment 2: infrared heater and treatment 3: radiant experimental system with supplemental heating of infrared light bulbs), which were used for the production of 17.700 females Cobb, for building, during two complete productive cycles, in the Videira City, Santa Catarina State, during the winter of 2004. In the characterization of the thermal conditional they were evaluate the air temperature (oC), relative humidity (%) and the Black Globe Temperature Humidity Index (BGHI). They were evaluated the concentrations of ammonia, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, in ppm, at the level of the birds. They were evaluated the animals performance: feed consumption (FC), weight gain (WG), feed conversion (FC), productive efficiency (PE), mortality (M) and water consumption (WC). For the study of the animal behavior it was accomplished the visual interpretation of images and processing and analysis of digital images through the extraction of the characteristics of pixels dispersion. It was observed that, for the first and second week of life of the young chickens, the treatment 3 it reached values (P <0,05) of BGHI and air temperature (oC) in the comfort band of the birds for a larger period of time in relation to the other treatments. Values critical of ammonia and carbon dioxide concentration had not been found us treatment, however treatment 2 presented critical values of carbon monoxide in first week of the birds life. Treatment 3 presented the best ones resulted of animal performance of FC, WG, FC, and PE. Mortality was within of the acceptable for commercial farms. The birds in first and the second week of life had presented the natural behavior of grouping, independently of the thermal state of the environment, however this grouping more was accented in treatment 1 (infrared heater) when compared under the same thermal condition of the others treatments, indicating to have a differentiation of the BGHI values bands. In the images processing it was observed that the values of BGHI had significantly correlated with the values of deviation standard of the pixels image sum. This correlation was negative, being that with the decrease of the BGHI values it happens the increase of the deviation standard values. These results indicate that the methodology of image processing with base in the standard deviation of the values sum of the pixels can be used as comfort/discomfort thermal indicative for birds in the first and second week of life.
