RESUMO
In this work the mechanicaldamage on bean seeds, type "Carioca" IAC (Campinas Agronomic Institute), submitted to spouted bed regime was experimentally analysed. The equipment consisted of a cone - cylindrical or a two - dimensional spouted bed, of laboratory scale, a blower and a cooler used to control the air temperature at about 30°C. A factorial planning was applied in two levels to evaluate the influences of the following process variables: cone angles of 45 and 60 °, air flowrates and 2.2 and 2.5 kg/min, times of the seeds exposure to spout of 1:30 and 3:00 h and initial moisture contents of the seeds of 9.3 and 13.8% in the cone - cylindrical bed with 3 kg of seeds. For the two - dimensional bed the weight of seeds was set in 1.8 kg and the variables analysed were: air flowrates of 1.8 and 2.1 kg/min, times of the seeds exposure to the spout of 1:30 and 3:00 h and seeds critical moisture contents of 9.5 and 12.1%. These influences were evaluated on the mechanical damage measured by the fissures and the germination ofthe seeds. To determine the percentage of fissures, including peeling and rupture, the seeds were dipped into a sodium hypochloride solution, and the observation was made with a magnifier. The germination test was made by exposure of the seeds in a germination chamber with controlled temperature at 25°C and relative humidity of 90% for 9 days.The results showed that the percentage of fissures in the seeds submitted to the cone - cylindrical bed is influenced by the time of expossure, the air flowrate and the initial moisture contento For the two - dimensional bed, the only significative influence on the fissures was the initial moisture content of the seeds. The seeds that were exposed to the spout and having low initial moisture content presented a significative increase in the fissures when compared to the original seeds. For the results of germination, it was verified that no significant influence occurred, for both bed geometries, in the final values of germinated seeds, with were higher than the minimum specified for good quality bean seeds
