RESUMO

An energy balance for the production of alcohol from sugar cane is presented; energy output/input ratios were found to be 6,4 and 9,5 for total energy (for "average" and "best efficiency" sugar mills, in the State of São Paulo, respectively) or 8,8 and 12,3 for fossil fuel-based energy, in the same conditions. A simulation model for the industrial sector was developed, allowing for the detailed energy analysis for different operational conditions. The model was tested against the actual performance of some sugar and alcohol factories, showing good potential for the prediction of bagasse surplus and electric energy production, as well as for energy optimization studies. A method based on dynamic programming is proposed to maximize the energy surplus for the whole production season. The introduction of some new technologies in alcohol production are analysed in connection with the modifications in the energy consumption and production levels and the thermal/mechanical energy balance
