RESUMO

the main purpose on this work was to evaluate, subjectively, the influence of radiographic image compression on the diagnostic of incipient proximal lesions created artificially. Extracted teeth were submitted to artificial drilling in its proximal surfaces, with diamond burs, so they were submitted to radiographic incidences utilizing the DenOptix radiographic digital system. The radiographic incidences were realized with three different horizontal angulations of the central X-ray beam: 0°, 5° and 10°.Those images were compressed with the software Adobe Photoshop 5.0, with compression levels of 1:6, 1:9, 1:14, 1:21, and evaluated by 16 experts that utilized a confidence scale to diagnostic determination. The results demonstrate that images compressed with levels of 1:9, associated with angulations of 5°, do not showed decreases in the diagnostic levels. Moreover, shallower cavities and thinner cavities (buccal-lingually), showed a low diagnostic sensitivity
