RESUMO

The Electric Power Brazilian sector has been passing through big modifications, from the transferences of ownership to changes in market rules, mainly the supply activity. This market consists of 64 companies, under private and public control, with different sizes and for all national area. The study of the efficiency of the sector is important, as long as it can support the Government through the analysis of the results obtained in the elaboration of good measures to the companies and offer, to the government to settle a good procedure to regulate the sector. The present application has an exploring conception. Its purpose is to analyze the efficiency of the Electric Power Brazilian Distribution Companies, during the years of 2001 untill 2005, using the non-parametric methodology DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis), considering constant and variable returns of scale. It was chosen a simple model of two inputs and two outputs. Finally it is showed the efficiency results obtained from DEA models, companies have presented good results in the two models used, which were analyzed by ownership control, size, location and kind of activity. The results of companies of the distribution segment were good in both methods
