RESUMO

In this work a numerical study of natural convection in fluid flow and heat transfer on an adiabatic surface (like plate, channel and cavity) with protruding heat sources is carried out. The flow is considered steady, laminar and two-dimensional. The physical properties are considered constant and the Boussinesq approximation is used. The finite control volume method is used to discretize the equations and the numerical solution is obtained by the SIMPLE algorithm. In these configurations, the velocity and temperature fields, the average Nusselt number on the heaters surfaces and the temperature distribution on the surface where the heat sources are mounted, are obtained as a function of the power dissipated, heater power distribution, heater spacing and aspect ratio. The validation of the numerical program was checked by solving a well known classical problem for which a benchmark solution is available. Experimental temperature measurements are also made in a horizontal cavity with heaters on the base and laterally cooled, as well as in the surface of a hydrodynamic cavity where heaters are mounted in one vertical wall, being the other wall, cooled by constant temperature; a visualization of the flow field is also perfonned in this case, using the solid tracers technique. The numerical and experimental results are compared, showing a good agreement
