RESUMO

This work represents a structural analysis of the supermarket sector in Salvador, considering theoretical, legal and market aspects, regarding rivalry conditions, competition patterns, market concentration, entry barrier levels and a survey of defensive techniques to competition used by regulatory organs in Brazil, in an attempt to understand the reasons for the weak penetration of the large national and international retail chains on the relevant market in Salvador, given the ample expansion process, adoption of competitive strategies and internationalization, present in the supermarket sector. In this sense, the effective and potential competition conditions of the referred relevant market are presented herein, in an attempt to obtain information and establish causality relationships which are able to identify and respond the questions presented above. In orderfor that, it has become necessary to verify the context in which the supermarket firms in Salvador are in, from the study of structural forces that condition the strategies and behavior of acting firms in this sector, as well as the concepts of concentration acts regarding the supermarket sector in Salvador, seeking to obtain a technical and economic justification for the high market concentration of this sector in the city previous mentioned.
