RESUMO
This dissertation aims at describing the local meanings and actions in face-to-face interaction between a deaf teacher and his hearing students in a teaching and learning LIBRAS context. I focus on the relations established by the participants with portuguese language and LIBRAS, with deaf and hearing identities and cultures in and through language use. Following ethnographic perspectives, (Erickson, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1996; Agar, 1980; Elly, Anzul, Friedman, Garner &Steinmetz, 1991; Winkin, 1998), the data is generated (Mason, 1997) through participant-observation, including, for instance, field notes, informal talks, audio and video recordings and retrospective diaries. The theoretical discussion is grounded on the Interactional Sociolinguistics perspective (Goffman, 1981, 2002; Gumperz, 1982a/b, Jacob &Ochs, 1995; Schiffrin, 1996), taking the notions of contextualization cues discussed in Gumperz, and footing introduced by Goffman. After a previous analysis of the data, I found in Hall?s Cultural Studies (1992, 2003a/b/c), Bhabha?s Post-Colonial studies (1992, 2000, 2003) and in the discussion of the sociologist and anthropologist De Certeau (1994, 1995, 1996) a theoretical affiliation to contemplate issues related to the understanding of language, identity and culture in deaf contexts ? concepts also discussed in the works of Rajagopalan (1998), Maher (1996) e César &Cavalcanti (to be published). Besides the integration and discussion of the triad language-identity-culture (in agreement with the researchers and specialists mentioned), I also take into account the notions of hybridity (Bhabha, 2003), diaspora (Hall, 2003a) and tactics and/or strategies (De Certeau, 1994, 1996). The results of the analysis show that the use of oral, written and signed modalities by hearing students in their relation with LIBRAS learning depends on the relevance and meaning of the interactional moment. This is due to the fact that not only different identities are being projected and constructed, but also because cultural differences are at stake. Although the teacher and some hearing students are users of sign and portuguese languages, it is both observed some conflicts regarding these language contact situation, as well as the distinct relation each participant establishes with sign varieties put together in the classroom setting
